Netflix – Parental Controls

Netflix has made a lot of improvements to their parental controls recently and they are quite easy to put into place.  So let’s get right to it.

First I created separate profiles for each family member and set the restrictions on the what content level should be shown.  If the profile is for a kid put a checkmark in the kid box.  This will narrow down the content options to:

  • Little Kids
  • Older Kids and below

If the profile is for a teen or adult, leaving that box unchecked will give two more options  to pick from:

  • Teen
  • All Content

This will restrict the content available under each profile but does not stop a kid from simply switching the profile from theirs to that of an adult.

STOP THEM!

To set this up you need to log into your Netflix account and choose an adult account. When you hover over your profile image choose Account.

Scroll half way down and under Settings choose Parental Controls

NOTE: You will have to re-enter the account password to access this area.

The first step is setup a 4-digit PIN.  Please DO NOT chose 1234 or 1111 or 9999 or…. Make it something the kids will find difficulty guessing.  They will try 😉

Next set the maturity level of show that will NOT require a PIN.  In my case I set the maturity level to Older Kids and Below.

You can also pick specific titles to require a PIN even if they fall under no PIN required level.  This way you can further curate the content for your kids.  Sorry SpongeBob!

Note: The shows listed above are just examples of how to customize this list, and not recommendations.

This does mean that all the teens / adults will have to take the extra step of entering this PIN to watch shows at that content level.  But it works slick and fast, and so far it has only been a minor nuisance.
