YouTube – Parental Controls

If your kids are like mine then from time to time they want to watch videos on YouTube, usually Minecraft or Egg Surprise videos.   However every once in awhile I would find them watching videos that were to violent or scary or… well, just inappropriate.  That is when I decided it was time to start implementing some parental controls.

The first step is to create a Google account so that the settings can be remembered.  In my case I created a Google account for both kids, but you could also create a single shared Google login.  I won’t go through creating a Google account here, but will write a post on how to and add the link here.

Once you’ve created the account, go to YouTube.com and on the top right click SIGN IN.

Then scroll to the bottom of the left hand menu and click on SETTINGS

Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see a setting called RESTRICTED MODE, and the default is Off.  Click on it and change it to On.

This will automatically block any content flagged as inappropriate by other users.  It won’t stop everything but it will catch a lot.
